Viscosuplementation refers to the line of products used to treat the arthritis in the knee joint. “Visco” is short for viscosity, and “supplementation” means we are adding a viscous gel to your joint as a supplement the volume of fluid currently in your joint.

As you develops more wear and tear in your joint from osteoarthritis, the cartilage begins to erode like rubber wears away on a car tire. As the number of cartilage cells and/or overall amount of cartilage decreases, the volume of natural hyaluronic acid reduces in turn. This creates a deficiency in the amount of lubricating fluid (synovial fluid) that protects the joint.

The “gel” or viscosupplement is a natural compound made by the joint’s cartilage cells, and it acts as a lubricating and cushioning gel to prevent rubbing and grinding in the joint that occurs because of osteoarthritis.

If you are familiar with cosmetic products such as gel fillers, it is essentially identical for a different purpose. Hyaluronic acid itself is a very thick material, but over time needs to be re-injected to fill the joint up again. Just like it when it’s used cosmetically to fill wrinkles or increase the volume of lips, it’s only good for a period of time, as the body slowly absorbs it.

Ultimately, viscosupplementation treats the reduction of fluid that occurs because of osteoarthritis by adding or supplementing your ailing joint(s) with a dose of hyaluronic acid made by various companies. Though most of these products are very similar to each other, we have listed them for your reference.
